As you move around our website you might notice a few changes. We have added enhanced localized resource directory pages in hopes that it will make find what you are looking for easier. It has a slightly different feel to it, which is a by product of an endeavour to make it more cross device compatible. Or in other terms, just trying to reach the broadest audience possible.

We are pleased to report that our expansion of B'nai Mitzvah and Jewish Wedding Magazine to Detroit, MI area is going well. We are currently in production and have an associate publisher. We hope to have the first edition of the magazine being distributed by mid-July. Please check back for more details and information.

Wherever you live, planning a Bar/Bat Mitzvah or a Jewish Wedding can be a stressful episode, but it need not be.
Please relax. You're among friends, now. Use the resources here and in our print editions to select vendors who care about you and your family and who know how to do things right. Even on a limited budget, you can find experienced professionals to help you. Don't even try to plan a Bar Mitzvah, Bat Mitzvah, Jewish wedding, or any special event without some assistance. And stop worrying about what everyone will think. be concerned about what you and yours think. They are who matters. Everyone else is an invited guest sharing YOUR moment. They'll never know that the photographer was supposed to take a photo of grandma and pop pop dancing, or that the fruit cocktail is supposed to have cherries. They will know if you look and act stressed out. Good planning is your best assurance that everything will come out looking, tasting, sounding and being wonderful! Mazel Tov!

As far as I know, there is no playbook for adult bnai mitzvah celebrations. Whatever makes you feel good is probably acceptable. Start by inviting every one you want (include non-jews, as well) to the synagogue. A simple kiddush luncheon, apart from what is sponsored at the synagogue, might be sufficient. If you like, a more elegant affair at a nice restaurant would certainly be appropriate, with you, the hostess, greeting guests as they arrive, perhaps giving a keepsake of a rose, or a chocolate somethingorother. Even a blesing over wine and challah would be nice. If you are into it, and you have the people to call, a candlelighting ceremony might suit you as well. If you want entertainment, book a room at a restaurant with a live band and dancing, so the party can continue after the meal. Any good catering coordinator can suggest some extras. like a pre-function open bar or hot appetizers. Stay away from the full kid-like party, as it may tend to lessen the true accomplishment you have achieved. However, that does not prevent you from a full wedding-like celebration, if you are so inclined. Just make it a bit more elegant and refined than a 13-year-old's party.

A stimulating family activity, and one that brings the whole family closer together, is to discuss the Bar / Bat Mitzvah's parsha, or Torah portion, and it's relevance in Today's world. Take one or two small passages per evening, perhaps at dinner or just after, and talk about what it might mean in historical context, and what it means today. Children may need guidance when it comes to some of the more arcane historical references, such as found in Numbers, or be pointed to the passages that lend themseves to wider meaning. Ask your Rabbi if you are uncertain or check sites like http://www.torah.net/ and http://shamash.org/tanach/dvar.shtml to get some explanations of D'var Torah.

One of the latest Bar / Bat Mitzvah simcha trends is for smaller luncheon receptions after the synagogue service, followed by children's party at some unique locations. Clubs, sports, theatre and themed recreation venues are becoming popular. Book early! These work well when most guests are local or with large numbers of kids.
